The three tests that you need to pass to become a driving instructor can be very demanding but with the right guidance it is achievable.

Before taking any of the tests you must have criminal record check and the register with DSA.

Part One consists 100 questions split into 4 sections which are:

25 questions on Road Procedure

25 questions on Traffic Signs and Signals, Car Control, Mechanical Knowledge, Pedestrians

25 questions on Driving Test, Disabilities, Law

25 questions on Instructional Technique, Publications

To pass the theory test you must get a minimum of 85/100 and a minimum of 20/25 in each section.

Also as part of the theory test there is the hazard perception test which is video clips where you must identify potential hazards. Each video clip lasts approximately 1 minute and there is 14 clips with 15 potential hazards. The sooner you identify the hazard the more points you will score with a possible 5 points for each hazard. To pass the hazard perception test you must score a minimum of 57/75.You must pass both elements to pass part one but you can sit this test as many times as you wish to pass the test. Once you have passed part one you have up to 2 years to pass parts2&3.

Part Two Test lasts for 1 hour and includes eyesight test, 5 show me/tell me questions on basic  car maintenance, driving on all types of road including motorway driving if applicable and you will be asked to perform all the manoeuvres. To pass the test you are allowed up to 6 minor faults with no serious or dangerous faults. You are only allowed up to three attempts at part two.

Part Three Test lasts for one hour but is split into two phases where the examiner will portray a learner. The first phase the examiner will play the part of a complete beginner or someone who has had limited lessons and you will be asked to introduce a new subject to them. The second phase the examiner will play the part of a learner who is up to or near test standard who is having difficulties in certain areas of their driving. What the examiner will be marking you on is how you put the lesson across, How quickly you can identify and correct any faults that they may doing. You will be graded between 1-6 on each phase and to pass the part three you must achieve a minimum of 4/4 . You are allowed up to three attempts at part three.
